MAIDEN NAME: In a letter written in 1939, Sarah's great granddaughter Mrs. James (Della) W. Good states that her great grandma's maiden name is Davis. Her son Isaac's death certificate lists parents as Charles Gibbons and Catherine Davis.

MARRIAGE: On the land grant application she gave a marriage date of 23 Feb 1806. No location was given.

RESIDENCE: Sugarloaf until husband died, then moved into home of Isaiah Cole in Salem Township, Luzerne County per land grant application. Isaiah Cole b. 1800 is husband of Mary Gibbons b. 1809. It would seem probable that Mary is a previously unknown daughter of Sarah.

DEATH: 8 Aug 1859 from gravestone.

PROBATE: Probate case opened 14 Aug 1877. Samuel Gibbons, (I assume her son) as administrator swears and affirms that she died on 8 Aug 1859. I am guessing that this is related to her son Thomas's probate in 1876. I am suspecting that the status of the160 acres she received in a land grant warrant (due to deceased husband's War of 1812 Service) in 1859 had to be cleared up in order to close Thomas's probate case. The Land Warrant (for land in Larned, Kansas) was sold and assigned to Lizzie Boyd on10 Feb 1880. Letters of administration were filed 14 Aug 1877 Vol 4 Page 499. (Year of record 1877 File No. 44). No apparent will for her or Charles.

I was researching Charles Gibbons online and found 20 documents relating to his widow’s application for a Bounty Land Warrant in regards to his war of 1812 service. These documents can be viewed at https://www.fold3.com/image/1/313139604 This database is free, but you need to register.

Also the probate index page at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9SM-75BW?i=840&wc=9PMK-JWG%3A268497701%2C268527501&cc=1999196 (also a free site, need to register) shows wills on file for Thomas and Isaac (sons of Charles). Although nothing listed for Charles himself. The wills themselves can be looked up on the familysearch.org site by going to the appropriate volume and page number.

NOTE: It is our belief that Hannah Gibbons is the daughter of Charles Gibbons of Sugarloaf, Columbia, Pennsylvania. However, we only have circumstantial evidence. It is as follows:
a) After Hannah and Jesse had both died by 1865, the remaining family scattered. Her son Jesse Z ended up in the household of Samuel GIbbons in Benton Township, Pennsylvania by 1870 (when he would have been 17). Samuel Gibbons is a son of Charles Gibbons and he has the same surname as Jesse's mother. This indicates family relation.
b) When Hannah GIbbons married Jesse K in 1835 the Charles Gibbons family lived only a few households away from Jesse per Sugarloaf census records. Charles Gibbons along with his sons Reuben, Samuel, Thomas, Charles and Isaac are also the only known GIbbons families in the county.
c) We have nine autosomal DNA matches to descendants of Charles Gibbons. Two through his son Thomas, five through his daughter Sarah, One through son Charles and 1 through daughter Mary, which all match our line through his daughter Hannah.
This adds up to strong circumstantial evidence that Hannah is the daughter of Charles Gibbons.

NAME: The only records we have of her maiden name is the death certificate of her child Jesse Z. Schultz listing Hannah Mayberry as his mother and her daughter Harriet on her 3rd marriage listing Jesse Schultz and Hannah Gibbons as parents. This creates considerable doubt on her maiden name. Perhaps a previous marriage? Charles Gibbons b. 1781 d 1857 lived in Sugarloaf. No record of a will in the probate index. No deed records in Columbia County. As the marriage record maiden name was reported by Hannah's daughter and the death record maiden name was reported by an unknown relative? of Jesse Z, I would have to give more weight to the Gibbons name. Also the fact that in 1870, Jesse Z was apparently listed in the household of Samuel Gibbons on the census gives more weight to the Gibbons name. Also the fact that there was a Gibbons family living nearby at the time of the marriage and that there were no known Mayberry families in the county gives more weight to the Gibbons name.

We have no documentary information on her parents. In 1840 the household was living in Sugarloaf, Columbia County, Pennsylvania with Jesse’s father Samuel as the next entry on the census record. There were no Mayberry’s listed in Columbia County in 1840, although there was the Charles Gibbons family living in SugarLoaf.

I have found online trees stating Lucinda was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania. I have not been able to find source information for this location.

The sale of his share of the real estate to the wife is suggestive of a divorce settlement. Although later she is listed as a widow.

Going to the website <http://www.suvcwdb.org/home/search.php?action=search> , (which is the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War which is the successor organization to the GAR Civil War veterans organization) and searching for Albert Shultz; I come up with an Albert Shultz, born 1840, Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry, enlisted or reenlisted on 31 Dec 1863, promoted to Corporeal on 25 May 1864, Prisoner of War 30 Jul 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, returned 18 May 1865 and discharged 28 July 1865. There is also an abbreviation DisFD which has to do with a disability discharge.

From the probate files we know that the child known as Albert Shultz (also known as C. Albert Shultz or Charles Albert Shultz) died before 1866. As he was alive in the 1860 census, that gives us a 6 year window for his date of death.
His enlistment records shows that in Dec 1863 he was 20 years 10 months old, (although census records showed him to be 4-5 years older) a resident of Watrousville and born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He signed his name Albert Shults.

An online listing of Michigan Civil War Rosters (<http://www.michiganinthewar.org/infantry/2compf.htm>) lists Albert Shultz age 21 of Genesee County, Michigan in Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry.

The ancestry.com civil war database lists Albert Shultz of Genesee County enlisted in Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry on 24 May 1861 at Fort Wayne, Michigan. He was 21. He received a disability discharge on 28 Jul 1865.

His war Department record reads:

“Captured at Petersburg, Va July 30, 1864, paroled at James River, Va Feb 22, 1865, reported at Camp Parole, Md., date not given, sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, Feb 26, 1865, reported there March 4, 1865 and sent to Columbus, Ohio, April 25, 1865. He rejoined Co. May 25, 1865. Was admitted to Carver General Hospital Washington D.C. June 22, 1865, from regimental hospital with Chronic Pneumonia and was transferred July 11, 1865. Entered Stanton General Hospital Washington D.C. July 17, 1865 with congestion of the lungs, was discharged from service at this hospital July 28, 1865, on Surgeons Certificate of disability.”

Army of the United States Certificate of Disability for Discharge states that Albert Shultz was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of: “Phthisis Pulmonalis acquired since enlistment by exposure while a prisoner at Danville, Virginia from July 1864 to February 1865-Disability total. Signed July 28, 1865 at Stanton General Hospital Washington, D.C.

On 28 May 1866 his name is mentioned in the “estate of C.A. Shultz” in Tuscola County Probate records, so he died sometime before that.

This brings up some questions. Did he stay hospitalized after discharge or was he simply sent home? Did he die at home? I would think that likely he died of Chronic Pneumonia brought on by the conditions at the POW camp. So although he did not die as a prisoner of war, he most likely died as a result of being a prisoner of war.

Could this Sally Shultz be SA Shultz? S.A. was not listed as an heir in 1866, so she would have been deceased by then. Not on 1860 census, probably deceased then. But when? If the 4 Shultz names listed together are siblings, then Sally would have to be S.A. I would think that is the likely answer.

The first school in the town of Juniata was taught in the summer of 1853 by Miss Ellen E. Miller, now wife of Charles R. Seldon of Caro. The building used was a low log shanty, built by D. G. Wilder to live in, until he could construct a better habitation. It stood nealy opposite the present site of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in Watrousville. 17 year old Emily Shultz died 1 Jan 1865. She left behind 2 month old Albert Smith. Probate records show that Gearhart and Nancy Kile filed for guardianship over Albert Smith. When Albert reached adulthood he legally changed his name to Albert Kile. It is our belief that Nancy Kile, whose maiden name is Nancy Shultz (the daughter of Samuel Shultz and Mary Norberry of Columbia County, Pennsylvania) was an Aunt to Albert.

An interesting entry in a Tuscola County History book shows Mary, Sally, Albert and Emily Schultz as being in the first school class in Tuscola in 1853. See below:

Jesse Zephaniah Shultz was born in Michigan on 20 Sep 1853 (date per the inscription on his gravestone) to Jesse K Shultz and Hannah Mayberry.

In the 1860 census (indexed under Sultz) we find him living in Juniata, Tuscola, Michigan with his mother and other siblings.

In 1866 Jesse's sister, Lucinda and her husband Jesse Fox were named guardians of Jesse Z along with his siblings, Thomas and Harriet.(Tuscola County probate packet 1-89)

In 1870 we have a possible census entry in Luzerne County, Pa where a J Z Shultz (indexed as J G Shultz on ancestry.com), age 17, born in Michigan is living in the household of Samuel Gibbons (this may be his mother's brother) as a laborer. Everyone else in the household was born in Pennsylvania. It may be reasonable to assume that after the mother died in 1865 (the father having died in 1853), the family dispersed.

On 31 March 1875 Jesse Z married Mary Francis Dawson in Botetourt, Virginia per Virginia Marriage records.

In 1880 we find Zeph Schultz (age27,born Mich) and Francis Schultz (age26, born VA) living in Sherman, Grayson, Texas with their two children Jesse (age 4, born VA) and Freddie (age 2, Born W VA).

4/16/08-Terry had a conversation with Dorothy Seeley (daughter of Harry Seeley)-The only thing she remembers about her Gramma Seeley (Harriet Schultz Seeley) is that she laid in bed upstairs at uncle Clarence's house ill. She used to moan and yell out. Her funeral home record says she died of paralysis so probably had stroke at some time??
4/16/08-Terry had conversation with Phyllis Watson and Dorothy Seeley--Harriet and George II Seeley are buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery. There is a grave marker according to both Phyllis and Dorothy. It is just a flat brick like marker with their names on it. They both think they could find it if we were to go to the cemetery. So that is a project we want to do. Dorothy said seems like it is by a big tree. I had looked in the past for their graves but assumed there was no marker since I could not find it. (update: got location of grave plot from historical society. It is under a big tree, but there are no gravestones there. Stone apparently was removed.)
