  Richard was born to James Gordon and Sarah Hinton (daughter of Thomas Hinton) in the area of Trafalgar, Ontario. At age 3 weeks his mother died. His father remarried Leah Furler in Trafalger about 1 1/2 years later. Richard shows on the 1851 census as lving in Trafalgar with his grandfather Thomas Hinton. His name is listed as Richard Hinton.
