    To:

My line is from Jacob (Jr.) Van Arnam (1773) who between 1804-1810 with his
brothers Richard and John claimed free land in the vicinity of Kingston, ON,
as sons of Jacob (Sr.) Van Arnam, Brunswick, NY, a Loyalist Ensign during
the Revolution. Although their name was Van Arnam it was often transcribed
as Van Ornam/Orman/Norman. About half of Jacob (Jr.)'s kids eventually
migrated to Illinois, perhaps as a result of the Panic of 1837; one
definitely in connection with Dunscomb's Rebellion. This line is traceable
back to 1664, New Amsterdam, however at least one and perhaps three early
    collateral lines are still missing.

There is a second family named Van Norman (Joseph and Benjamin) out of
Pennsylvania by way of Western New York who settled around Brantsford, ON,
to smelt iron ore around 1825. They may descend from a guy named Joseph Van
Norman who lived in the Minisinck area of New York, Pennsylvania and New
Jersey about 1750 but it dead ends there. Many believe he was the son of
Samuel Van Amen/Naamen who married Sara Delmontainie. Maybe he was but all
of this descent looks to trace to a book on the Montaigne family published
over 100 years ago which doesn't seem to cite any authority for it.There
are enough specific early birth dates associated with this family that I
suspect there is or was at one time a family Bible somewhere. However, I've never
seen it or even reference to it.

The question is whether these are two distinct families or one long-separated?
The answer is there's not enough information yet.
